I really need to buy a micrometer now I now longer have access to university-supplied ones.
My gut says to get a portable one, one of the handheld styles that my professor had, mostly because I teach and I tend to make reeds in odd places (like while sitting in my garden). But I don't have a lot of experience with them, so I'm open to suggestions for brand, style and place of purchase.
I can get the Reeds and Stuff one here in Oz for a lot cheaper than overseas (save about $50), but that's the only one I can get here. Price is not a huge factor since I know I'm going to get slaughtered with the exchange rate anyway!
Thanks,
Rachel

Hi Rachel,
I own two: A Mitutoyo (which I bought from Dan Ross) had held micrometer which I use to check the consistency of my gouge and free standing Georg Rieger which I use to check the thickness of my reed tip(s).
Both are costly~!
I am happy with both.
