How do you ID cracks in wood oboes?
Author: LongCat

I bought my first wood oboe a few months back, and I am absolutely terrified about cracks. I've been taking all the preventative measures (I'm even lugging it around in an insulated tote bag between buildings!), but am still really worried because I don't know what I'm looking for. Whenever I notice a little line in the wood my heart stops, but it never appears to be open at all when I take a closer look with a flashlight. If somebody could tell me how I can differentiate cracks from just grain in the wood, it would put me more at ease.
Thanks!

Cracks usually go longer than natural grains and sometimes cross through grains.

At least it's not going through anywhere important!

Interesting that there's a slight gap around the post as well.

... and a fair gap between the pillar and the end of the trill beam as well.

Possibly due to a shock to the post? If the oboe was dropped in its case onto a hard surface it could cause this - the plush lining would be no protection.

Woody, it was just the easiest example to find. I don't think Ceci would mind :)

This is a good/informative topic.
I had a wood RIEC for years that never cracked. I also have a Marigaux with 5+ cracks, even though I treated the two instruments the same way. I didn't know the Marigaux was cracked until the repairman discovered several cracks in the tone holes during yearly service. However, I did notice that playing pianissimo on high F was difficult. Perhaps "invisible" cracks hidden under keys are identifiable by changes in how the instrument responds.
