There used to be a small, thin (3-4") pin vise with a single slit in the end, into which you put a very thin piece of mylar, which you used to check the eveness of contact betwee a pad and the associated tone hole. Does anybody know where these might be available? Thanks

I know of the tool you're referring to, but don't know of a definite source.

My best guess would be:

I've never used a handle with feeler gauges - I just cut the finest cigarette papers (silver Rizlas, although you can use blue Rizlas which are twice as thick as most people do) into a long triangle the entire length of the cigarette paper, tapering down to a long 1mm tip and use that on its own as a feeler gauge. Once it gets tired you can either recut it or bin it and get a new piece.

I also use cigarette papers, sliced into narrow strips with one end stiffened with scotch tape on both sides.

You layer the scotch tape onto 2/3 of the length of the paper first, and then cut the whole thing into strips. There's a youtube video demoing this somewhere, but I can't find it just now.

I've seen that too. I believe it's in one of John Peterson's repair tutorials (I'm too lazy to look for it right now - just got home from a rehearsal).

Found it - john peterson aka oboedr has a great set of videos on youtube.

This one covers making and using a feeler gauge.

For flutes, I use a length of audio cassette tape contact cemented to a piece of a bamboo skewer cut to 2-3 inches long. The tape is quite thin and durable, and the bamboo skewer handle is very light for a sensative feel.
