Hi everyone,
After a 15 year stint with a Loree AK, I have made the switch to a Marigaux 2001, altuglas. Stunning instrument in all respects.
I have found, as anyone will when switching instruments, that I may need to change my setup a bit. I am using an opus1 gouger (have been for about 7 years) on a Joshua +2 OR +4 (I switch back and forth) on Sierra Staples.
What are setups for other Marigaux users out there?

Hi,
I switched from a Loree to a Marigaux 901 about 5 years ago.
These are the changes I made .. (although you are playing a Mariguax 2001.)
The biggest change is in my staple opening. I switched to Glotin staples with a more oval shape. The old Loree staples were more tapered.
I did not change my shaper tip. I use a RGD - 1n.
I also began to use a 45mm staple as well. Although this might be a preference/particular to my Oboe. I have played on other peoples reeds at 47mm staples with no problem too.
I use a Ross Gouger. Dan made me a custom curve a based upon my instrument, staple, shaper tip and tie. I didn't like the results of the regular blade I used with my Loree. I had problems in the upper register ... a bit sharp and not as free and I wanted more depth to my tone. I just used some cane gouged on the Ridilla Gouger from Forestsmusic. (My Ross gouger is being serviced at the moment.) The results were quite good.
My scrape has changed, It is easier to make reeds since the Oboe is less reed sensitive/picky. I can take off lots of cane and still have a full warm core sound. This was not the case with the Loree which was very reed finicky and required more gut. The sound is built into the Marigaux to a much greater degree.
One more comment - I recently bought a shaper machine (Reeds n Stuff) which uses a template rather than a shaper tip. My reeds tie/close well all perform much better than before. The machine although expensive is a real pleasure.

PS: As with other new instruments I had ... I did have my Oboe adjusted/tuned over the course of the first year to even out the timbre on one note and pitch on another note. I also had some key work on the C, C#, Eb keys to bring them up higher and the have the same characteristics/feel as a Loree Oboe. I found the key to be set to low and flat for my hands.

I'm definitely eyeing the altu for my next oboe. For my grenadilla 2001 Marigaux, I'm using (I'm no expert reedmaker) 3 types of staples (Sierra, Chiarugi #5 and Marigaux 48 mm). I've not much experience on the 3rd yet, but the first 2 seem to be fine. The 3rd I bought to see if it would bring my pitch a bit down.
