 Fox English Horn 510??
Author: Tik

Hello!

I am interested in this Fox English Horn 510 (plastic top join and wood on other parts) but I have no idea about it sound. Would anyone share about the experience about this horn?

I had already searched throuh the internet but counld not find any video demonstrate that horn. Can anyone share if you have the demo video of this?

Actually, I am also interested in the Loree EH i+3 (which I request for synthetic top joint and wooden other parts). Certainly, it is more expensive than the Fox 510 (about US$2800 more).

I am struggling...
If the Fox 510 is good enought, I can go stright to it.
If the Fox 510 is fair/ bad, I will go to the Loree.
If the Loree is just a bit better, I will go to Fox.

Please give me some information. Thanks a lot!!

I have played several Fox 500/510 horns, and found them to be very comparable to Loree. I think they're just about the best "deal" in the oboe world! Highly recommended. Of course, as with any English horn, once you have the instrument in hand it is time to go bocal shopping. Good luck!

I've tried my friend's Loree and like it much better than my Fox 500. Worth the price difference for myself? At this point, no, as the Fox is quite a steal. Bocals? A better one than the standard XL will make a Fox sound better. I find the Fox is more "punchy" and the standard bocal emphasizes it even more. In general, I'm pretty happy with it, until a long ways down the road when I can afford a new one and play it more seriously.

I played a new 510 when I was in the US for about a year. I thought it was fabulous and so did my oboe professor. For the price, I think it is good value. It also seemed quite ergonomic to me. They are also quite reed tolerant (puts up with a large variance in quality!). For the amount of time I would spend playing cor (i.e. not very much), I would either buy a 510 or an older (seasoned and hopefully less prone to cracking!) wooden cor.

I was EH shopping for about 6 months and tried a bunch of Fox English Horns. They were pretty good for the price, but there was just a few tuning problems that i consistently found that made not feel comfortable enough on them. I ended up with a plastic top joint Loree, which I'm very happy, and play it professionally. It's not as good as some of the wooden Lorees I've played, but it's certainly good enough for the job, and it brings me great comfort knowing I can put it down for a month or two and not worry about cracks.

Many thanks for the above advices.

I get that

- Fox 500 and 510 are good things, but people would shift to other EH if they have more money and become more serious in playing.
- Loree are better (or much better)

I want (may be a stupid thought) to buy one EH, which can be my life long partner. So, Loree (with synthetic material top joint I prefer) are more likely to be “life long”…

Am I right???
