I like JRC's answer. And I like providing 'color' and 'tone quality' to music. And I have nervous system problems which, when coupled with the present oboe fingerings, do not make highly technical passages come easily to me.

I find that (as Susan commented) that some composers don't write well for instruments they are unfamiliar with. You can't just look up an instrument's range and write a part that works; there are other considerations. Perhaps the perceived dearth of technical/challenging oboe music has to do with this rather than with the instrument itself?? Brahms I has a solo which truly stretches the oboist, but in a rather complimentary way and not (I think) out of his ignorance as a composer.

How many of us love Bach but find it a struggle to play a sustained piece of his, considering that we (as wind players) must BREATHE somewhere while a pianist (keyboardist) can inhale anywhere and anywhen they like?

I am obviously less experienced and trained than many on this board, so will leave further comment up to yous!
