 Baroque/Hautboy Reed Manual

hello all,
To those of you that dabble in baroque oboe, hautboy ( or whatever you choose to call our 2-keyed predecessor), have any of you read and found useful a book I recently discovered called, "The Hautboys Reed Book" It's by Dr. Marianne Pfau and printed in Germany by Egge Verlag ( in German and English). It sounds interesting to me...maybe along the lines of the Jay Light or David Weber manuals??

I haven't dabbled in baroque oboe yet (only flute), but I recently (as in, last week) came across a journal, the Galpin Society Journal, which is an early music journal. There were at least two articles in the archives (one from 1962, one from the 80s) regarding reeds from the 18th/19th century - there were even photos of some that existed from this era, and measurements.

I found them via JSTOR - the online journal database that many college libraries are subscribed to.

I'm still hoping to figure out why it doesn't seem possible to stick a huge baroque-like reed on a modern oboe and get that special sound.... Those reeds are bigger than modern EH reeds.

an EH shape would still be too narrow really, though I understand they would use them when all this early music stuff started in the 60's. I'm certainly not an expert on all this, but I know the bores are much different...its like blowing down a big open recorder. So the reed needs a wider shape and more spread to be able to really "flex" your air and even flex your pitch ( G# and Ab reallycan be a different pitch), G#Ab and F# are hitting a single hole in a space with two holes ( tricky and can show your reed flaws because this wholendesign seems rather unstable bore-wise)and then there are forked fingerings like F and Bb that needs the reed to be able to flex to make those sound nice. So far in my reed exploration, I have a very narrow and low spine, not really windows, thin sides and some mysterious "blob area" in the heart area that allows the reed to TRY to pop the octaves ( and sometimes choking my throat slightly)..still .very mysterious foe me! No radical sections - more like a bassoon reed I think? For now, I do a long scrape, but shorter in relation to my mod long scrape reeds.

Mine is a 2 keyed Joel Robinson/ Steve Hammer boxwood A 415 Saxon oboe made in the 1980's representing the 1720's ( that sounds funny!) Per Steve Hammers recommendation I now use 50mm Chiarugi staples designed by Steve for this instrument. Steven Bard in PA sells shaped b oboe cane of three diffeent shapes and Steve Hammer just came out with shaper tips made by Westwind which sound intriguing. some people hand shape - OMG!

Though I am trying to get my mod oboe playing in shape, I've always thought the sound of a baroque oboe was beautiful ( well, unless is sounds like a sick cat which is easy to do!) and pure.

There is a hautboy research group board on Yahoo and hautboy.org are interesting sites for those interested

It seems a more primitive beast, yet I think the freedom and free flow of blowing it is kind of liberating...though I have "octave key envy" when I try to play.

I still need to get the book I mentioned for this post. besides Galpin, I do believe there have been articles in IDRS journal over the years on b oboe reeds as well
