Don't overlook the wonderful old recordings of Ravel, Debussy and Ibert of the Philadelphia Orchestra (Ormandy conducting) with John deLancie as principal oboe. These recordings are loaded with beautiful, elegant oboe playing. No one played the French music like deLancie did. Many of these old recordings have been re-released on CD for a very reasonable price.

Also, there is a wonderful old recording which is out of print of Marc Lifshey playing Bach Cantatas 46 and 82 with Mack Harrell (father of the great cellist Lynn Harrell), baritone. This is a treasure if you can find it.

There is also another recording which is loaded with gorgeous oboe (and other woodwind playing, for that matter). It is a recording of the Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit.

Although this is an older entry, it deserves updating and correcting. First, the Bach Cantata recording is of #56, not #46, and is, Ich wil den Kreutstab gerne tragen (I will carry the Cross with gladness). The other one is #82, Ich habe Genug (It is enough). This is an RCA recording with Robert Shaw conducting, and Marc Lifschey, the oboist, but I can’t remember if this was done in Cleveland or New York, but it was in the early to middle ‘60’s, as best I can remember. Mr. Still was very complimentary about this recording and no matter what oboe school you are from or prefer, this is definitely, great playing. Parts of this recording are up on Youtube, as well as an equally beautiful recording of the main aria from the Wedding Cantata, #202. Interestingly, the main aria in #56 is quite jubilant in sound, not at all what you would expect from the title. Regrettably, as far as I know, this has not been re-released on CD.
The recordings of some of the French music by the Philadelphia Orchestra that is referred to, e.g., Le Tombeau, have been released on CD. Both it and the Ibert, Escales are of reference quality.
The Rachmaninoff Dances under Dutoit would probably have Dick Woodhams, being the oboe player. The recording under Ormandy has de Lancie, and there is an even earlier one under, either Stokowski or the composer, himself, and this would have Tabuteau, as the oboist, maybe even Robert Bloom, as the E.H. player. The Dances were, of course, dedicated to the Philadelphia Orchestra. Some of the above requires some research, and I will try to do that. Regards, Loree BF51

There are a lot of the old Stokowski & His Orchestra recordings being re-released on CD (for very good reason) featuring Robert Bloom. He's one of my favorite oboists and a major influence in my style of playing. Here's a few of my fav recordings:

1) GALA #CACD0546: 'Stokowski conducts a Russian Spectacular'. Highlights include Moussorski's 'Night on Bare Mountain' and the 'Khovantchina Suite' with utterly gorgeous oboe licks.

2) GALA #CACD0522: "Tschaikovsky, Sibelius & Liszt". Bloom's EH on the Swan of Tuonela, and playing oboe on Liszt's Les Preludes and Tschaikovsky's Swan Lake are not to be missed.

Also, the Lifschey recording of cantatas #56 and #82 has been reissued on CD and may still be available from his widow Paula Lifschey. Go to www.marclifschey.com for more details.

Another of my favorite oboists is Harold Gomberg. I am working with a friend to transfer our old vinyl to CD, and hopefully, copyright having expired, we will be able to make those old, wonderful recordings available as well.

Enjoy...

I welcome interest in recordings of those players who, once the Big Dogs in the business, are now history. There are some wonderful performances out there...

Thank you for your reply. In your H. Gomberg collection do you have the old Decca (U.S.) recording with the Telemann e minor Partita and possibly the Britten Phantasy? Thanks for the link for the Lifschey CD. Re the Bloom recordings there was one on RCA's "Vault Treasure" series, of Bach's Cantata #131, Aus der Tiefe and maybe one other Cantata. I don't think this was a Bach Aria group recording, but maybe an early form of it. Regards, Loree BF51

Hi, Lorée BF51 -

That was another recording that helped shape my playing. Fortunately I had a tape recorder by the time it came out and I didn't wear out my vinyl listening to it over and over. And over...

Decca 9618. Mozart oboe quartet, Telemann sonata in c minor and Partita in e minor. A great recording.

email me privately and we can talk more about this.

I own the Bach recording of 46 and 82. Extraordinary recording with Mack Harrell (father of Lynn Harrell) bass. Sad I never got to meet Lifschey.

The Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances with Dutoit and the Phila. Orch. is a superb recording! Gorgeous woodwind playing all around. Woodhams and Lou Rosenblatt are both playing.

deLancie's recording of The Flower Clock is still one of my all-time favorites. Beautiful, elegant playing!!

Thanks to oboereed1109 for the reponse. Again, the Cantata number is 56, not 46, and it was reissued on RCA's lower priced "Victrola" line as VICS-1468 and in fact, my contact at the station said that Carl Grapentine was going to be playing it, this week. She said that the copyright is 1960 and I think that probably applies to both the original "Living Stereo" version and the Victrola version. Regards, Loree BF51

I have the Harold Gomberg recordings you mentioned, including the Fantasy. It is on a Cardinal record label, and titled "The Art of Harold Gomberg".
The Fantasy is together with the six metamorphoses and the Mozart quartet - I don't know if this is the same recording as on the DECCA record described by Bob Hubbard (I have that one, too).

They have been transferred privately to CD from the vinyl by some of Harold's relatives to preserve these great recordings, and I feel privileged to own them.

J.

I think that must be a later recording of the Phantasy. Cardinal was the lower priced line from Vanguard and apparently bought the rights for some other company's recordings and then re-released them on the Cardinal line. Unfortunately, I lost the Decca record in a move, so I can't look at it now. By the way there is a trio sonata recording of Robert Bloom, Julius Baker, and ? on CRI records of the Hunter Johnson trio (composer at U. of Ill. in 1960's) and maybe a Telemann or Handel trio sonata.
