I have to add that since D.Teitelbaum reamed my Loree's bell, I haven't had that shrill, thin and empty tone I used to have in Montreal way back when. I like to think this is because of my new reed methodology, but I have to wonder...
I'm REALLY tempted to buy a wood-turning machine and learn to make some bells out of maple wood (without the low Bb.....). This would be risk free but there's always the issue of time.
I've been wondering for years why the oboe doesn't have the pear-shaped bell... even bassoons have a swell in their bells!
