Need help adjusting reed for high E
Author: Jaysne
Date:   2010-04-12 23:14

I have a really nice oboe reed. It plays all notes with a full, in-tune sound, with the exception of high E above the staff. (Even the high F comes out much easier.) Most of the time the E won't even pop out unless I strain for it.

Can anyone give me advice as to how I can adjust my reed (if possible) to make the E an easier note to hit? Thanks.

Hi,

It might not be a reed problem from waht you describe.

What make oboe is it?

This is an adjustment that a repair person needs to make and/or you might need alternative fingerings. Maybe pad leaks? Or a tuning problem?

For example, on my Marigaux - I did some tuning to help the High Eb speak easier and I also found an alternative fingering - which works well too -

I have an Incagnoli oboe.

But I don't think it has to do with the make. I didn't mention that I only have the problem with this particular reed. I can get the E with all my other reeds.

I found that as I changed reed styles in the last year, my tone improved, but my reeds were much more sensitive to leaks in the instrument. The specificity of your problem to one note just seems to point to an instrumental rather than a reed problem.

Mark would you mind telling me what your alternative fingering for high Eb is on your Marigaux?

I have a Marigaux and the high Eb is hopelessly flat.

Thanks

Look at these charts (hosted at this website) - do none of these fingerings or alternate fingerings work for you?

There are only two fingerings on this chart for the Eb. I have tried both and neither work. (And I know it's the oboe and not me or the reed because it is just as flat when my teacher plays it. He has tried adjusting various keys but that hasn't made a difference).

Ceri, you play short scrape reeds?

I assume you lift your half hole plate for the higher register, and that your half hole plate is adjusted to close as much as possible. Try:

023|000 + low C key

If that is flat, probably the low C key has been adjusted to close down the E key too much, there is a screw there that adjusts the height of that. If it responds badly, the half hole plate is not adjusted correctly and you have to bring it to a good repairman to take a look, or, try lowering it as much as you can just before it closes completely. If your high D, with the open fingering:

023|000

is flat, then you might have a problematic instrument, or that the reeds will not work at all for your oboe.

I hope you find a solution soon!

Howard

The alternate fingering is the following:

third octave key ,open B, closed A and G keys. You can also experiment by depressing the AB key too.

I also had my oboe tuned - because my Eb did not speak easily - and a thread of sound in it.

For example, - - if your High D is a good note - the repair person takes from the High D and gives it to the Eb.

She adjusted my Eb - both fingerings now work well for me - I choose one fingering over another depending upon the music.

Forgot to mention, that the height of the 3rd octave key influences fingerings that use it of course, and i believe for Mark's setup you might have to make the 3rd octave key open quite a lot yes? So, there are a lot of possibilities!

There are several alternative fingerings on the website on the "alternative fingerings page" (I thought I suggested you click through on this in my previous post, but in retrospect I wasn't very clear).

Here is a link to the alternative fingerings webpage:
