 Loree prices over the years
Author: kimber
Date:   2010-01-30 17:33

I recently came across the receipt for my Loree (new, rosewood, w/ 3rd octave) from 1988 for $3260. Knowing what the prices are currently...

If you bought a new Loree, what year did you buy it and about what did you pay for it?

Just curious as to what the trend might show.

Not sure, but if you got the cash, it probably wouldn't be a terrible investment. Perhaps 20 years from now we'll be playing on particle board oboes and plastic stuff since grenadilla is running, and we'll reminisce about the good old "all grenadilla oboes" that were so much better?

I do know that Laila Storch bought an EV Loree (early 70s perhaps?) and tucked it away in her closet because she was afraid prices would go up and she wanted to keep on hand. It's never been played on regularly except for the occasional test every couple of years, and she wants something like $6000 for it. You can imagine it probably cost her like $500 back in the day.

I have tried over 15 new Loree's from various suppliers - $7500 to $7900 and more for a royale.

I saw used a LW series Loree advertised for 5500 dollars- ouch! Most go for about $5000.

The demand just outstrips the supply. I sold my old Loree for what I paid for it 12 years ago.

The Loreé I currently play is from 1979.
I payed €2750 for it and it belonged to Werner Herbers solo oboist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for more than 30 years.
This oboe has seen all the great concert halls in the world played all difficult exerpts and still is at a level few instruments are.
No way you can pay to much for a topnotch instrument.

I have a c series Loree that I still use. I bought it used in 1982 for $1500. It's never been overhauled and it still plays fine, though I admit it probably wouldn't hurt to send it in. It's my spare oboe now, though I just used it to play Peter and the Wolf as it has a "duckier" sound than my 2004 Loree Royal which I payed $6500 for. I will most likely sell my Royal when I get my new Hiniker.

2001 is when my parents bought my oboe. DM Loree and it was $4700 but after taxes and shipping it came to about $5100. Bought from Forrests music. I dont think Royales were over the 7000 mark yet but I could be wrong.

I bought my Lorée oboe CR75 in the middle '60s for $560.00.

I imagine I could sell it for $1500 today. It's still a great instrument.

I tell my students to buy the best used professional instrument they can afford. They can almost always sell it for more than they paid for it when it's time to move up...

Hmm; I got my EU Loree for $1700 last year "on line"; overhauled for about $150 and it has minimal wear...but I could never sell it!
