Very true. I've watched with great excitement each passing year as more dealers carry more oboes. It raises an interesting question... sort of like "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" Certainly many Americans played Loree because they had few other options. But perhaps they had few other options because they all played Loree in the first place. If there's no market for another oboe, no dealer will import it. Had Americans been more interested in other oboes, they would've created more choices for themselves. Of course, it's difficult to become interested in other oboes if you never get the chance to try them.

In any case, I think the annual IDRS conferences have played a major role in opening our American eyes to many other fine oboe-makers. And the internet has been an invaluable resource. As we hang out in this forum and converse with players from around the world, it's easy to forget that just twenty years ago it was much more difficult to chat with oboists overseas. We're a lucky bunch, aren't we?
