I have been happily purchasing my gouged and shaped oboe cane from Dunkel & Severson for many years. Generally they do a pretty consistent job and they have a great selection of shapes. With my recent venture into EH, however, I find myself dissatisfied--lots of cracking and inconsistent structure near the tip causing ruffling of the tip. You can actually see spongy or pulpy areas in some reeds. (I'm getting the "hard" cane; I had experienced lots of cracking with the "extra hard" oboe cane, but once I switched to "hard" my cracking problems pretty much disappeared with the oboe cane. But the "hard" EH cane displays cracks while finishing maybe 2/3 of the reeds that make it to the testing stage.)
I'm soaking the cane a bit longer before tying (2.5 hrs) hoping to avoid the cracking problem, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Are these sorts of cane problems generally more common with the larger EH reeds or am I just getting a an inferior batch of cane? For those of you in the United States who buy gouged and shaped cane, from whom do you get your good stuff?
