 What's your favorite Vandoren?

What is your favorite Vandoren mouthpiece?

No, this is not a "what is best" question or anything similar to that. It's more to satisfy my curiosity of current trends. Focused/spread, hard/soft reed, etc...

Of the Vandorens I like the M15 best because of it's focus. I used to prefer the B40s but grew tired of the "woolyness" quality.

Hard to answer..........because:

I had swapped a B40 Lyre for a 5RV Lyre 88 series 13 and now both of us are totally in love with the mouthpieces we have now.

I use the Vandoren Rue Lepic #4 and have a sound and feel which is ideal for me.

5RV and B45 dot, in the past. But just not right now... B45 dot gives me my best tone but I've got into the habit of squeaking on it, don't know why.

A dead one? ;)

Actually I really rather liked the B45dot I used for a few years. I went back to my Borbeck a couple of years ago though and haven't switched back...

sinkdraiN,

I've been playing an M-15 for the last six months based on the recommendation of my teacher, Steve Girko. It took me awhile to get used to the close facing (and the requisite harder reeds), but I'm totally happy with the piece and the resulting sound.

5RV, with a 2.5 or 3 Zonda reed works for me.

i have been using the m15 13 series and rue lepic #4 with vandoren optimum. sometimes i use the new leather vandoren ligature, but it is not as easy to tounge fast passages as the optimum.

The B40 is my favourite vandoren, but I've to admit that it hasn't got further than my backup mouthpiece. I currently play a viotto B3, it plays very similar... but you haven't got to search your entire lifetime for a good one...

I recently picked up a new/old V-13 (now discontinued). It has become my favorite for the main Bb. It's a little brighter than a Grabner K-13 and with this particular instrument intonation is better. For all the other Bb and A horns, the Grabner is still first choice. My daughter now plays the M-15 that was my main mouthpiece until a few months ago.

M15, V12 4

This is the only mouthpiece I have tried besides the stock piece. I really like it and don't plan on trying anything else.

I've had my best results with an M30/13 profile 88 and VD V12 3.5s. The long lay is difficult to get used to (choking on so much mouthpiece), but it is sounding good and is responsive when you get enough of it in your mouth.

I've only blown a few Vandoren mouthpieces, so this comparison is to about 2-dozen 'pieces of various brands.

I have a B45 which was stuffy when I got it, but after David Spiegelthal refaced it it blows very freely and has a warm tone.

I have been doing pretty well with my M15 and VD#4 V12's for a while, but I plan on trying Rico Grand Concert Select 3.5's or 4's soon, because the 3's that I tried on my mouthpiece seemed to have great tone and response, despite being a bit soft for the rest of my setup. And I think V12 4's are actually a bit hard for me.

I don't have experience with all the Vandoren models but the ones I really liked are the 5RV Lyre, B45, B45 Lyre, and B40. My backup mouthpiece is a B45 and it is excellent. Maybe it plays even easier than my main mouthpiece. Only reason it's my backup is my main has a slightly better sound imho.

Katrina -

No, not a dead one - I liked it so much I bought a second one, and they both do it! It's just me. When I work out what it is I'll let the world know...

B45 dot with Grand Concert Select 3s or Mitchell Lurie 4s depending on what I'm playing.

The McClune JP (a custom mouthpiece which Dave McClune makes using the M13
as a blank).

I am always impressed by the M15-13 when I put a reed on and start playing. Unfortunately, if I keep playing it sort "closes" on me and looses it focus and ease of articulation.

I feel the opposite way with the M13-Lyre. When I start playing it, I find it a little resistant, but as I warm up, it becomes very easy to work with. It is currently my favorite Vandoren piece.

I have not tried the latest M30, but heard good things about it.

I have a student who plays on a Vandoren 11.1 (which I think is no longer available) and sounds quite nice.

Many years ago I played on a Vandoren 55 (a fairly open mouthpiece), but it was easy blowing and had nice projection...GBK

I like the m30 with my diminishing stock of Gloten 2.5 reeds. I tried several at the VD shop and they seemed consistent. I have never managed to find a b45 I could get along with, but a fellow musician here gets wonderful results with one.

From what I've tried, I like the M30. With size 3 V12 reeds. probably gonna pick one up soon.
