 Q's about DISTANT future plans

I was just wondering if I could get some opinions. I've determined through many questions and serial number lookups that my clarinet is a buffet E-13 made in the early 70's. I'm a sophomore at college and plan to go into a career in teaching (mathematics) with playing my instrument on the side in community bands, well, anything.

Is it advisable to stick with the clarinet I have? Or would it be worth perhaps looking into more "professional" clarinets? It seems like a car decision. Should I stick with my old car and just maybe make small adjustments? I'm making the mouthpiece adjustment as we speak and maybe look for a better than stock barrel? Could I put a LH Eb lever on there (is that possible to add-on)?

Or is it really worth getting ready and saving for a new professional model? Opus, R13, Yamaha whatever number, 10G or 10S, etc. I will definitely be practicing daily when I do get a fulltime job after graduation and plan on being in whatever community band/chamber ensemble (I have recently been introduced to these and LOVE them). And I am also toying with the idea of taking a leave of absence after a few years of teaching to join a military band or basically just see what I can do in the world of paid musicians. Thanks.

May as well just say that my first instinct is to keep this one cause I do really like it. But I am eventually gonna go pretend to buy some instruments just to try out a leblanc or selmer or yamaha. Just to try. But I wanted other opinions as well.

In my opinion I'd like to offer you all the best wishes possible, SFAlexi :)

Looking at this as practically as possible, since it's a very subjective matter, I'd say do what your heart tells you. I'm not trying to be trite here, it's really all about what You want to do and where you are along your personal time line. Of course, none us can definitively predict our own terrestrial future but, if you like your present instrument and you work well together why change anything? If you do eventually go out to make a stab at joining the ranks of the pros, will a new horn make any difference? Seems to me there's plenty of time for you to consider that.

In your present situation I'd probably wait a year or two, save my money (if there's any to be saved:) and see what turns up after graduation. You should have a clearer indication then what direction you're going and just how much making music will will be part of your life. No harm in looking at possibilities and even dreaming grand dreams. Things do, however, have a way of fluctuating as we go along and we need to be equipped to deal with change. It looks to me like you're on the right path to establishing a good personal foundation from which to branch out, and not really not that far from now, at your discretion. Don't let go of that and I wish you all the best.

Thanks for replying. I realize I've bee posting a lot and I guess people are just kinda skipping over at this point so I'll back off. I was just wondering cause if it was recommended to look at other instruments, I need to start saving/budgeting now. And I guess I have been a little TOO active. So as you can see I haven't posted something in a while and I'll try to keep stuff at a minimum now. Thanks anyway though for the response Ron. It really was very relieving just to know that this post was read and also your response was very logical. Probably something I wouldn't have thought of out of my own inexperienced head. Thank you (for the nth time here)

Alexi
