 Note Counting Question
Author: BGBG
Date:   2017-09-15 17:42

How do I say the note-count for two 3/4 measures where first measure is a half note tied to an eighth note joined to another eighth note and the second measure starts with an eighth not followed by a half note and two sixteenth notes tied together. I somehow find this very confusing not to play but to say the count. In other words I can 'sense' the timing but unsure how to actually count it, maybe due to accenting the eighth note beginning the measure. Want to confirm how to say the count to understand the rhythm and be sure it is correct.

By golly it DOES seem to work if I persist at it. The audio, which I did not notice at first, really helps. I usually have never counted or had to count out rhythm like this but I think I will get it now.

Glad to help, slow down and break up any rhythm you can't sightread a soon as possible to make it easier.

The way the second measure is written doesn't help.

Try rewriting it as:

2 eighth notes (with beam)
the second of which is tied to quarter note
which, in turn, is tied to the first of 2 eight notes (with beam)

That is a more "correct" way to write it and makes it easier to see where the beats fall.
