Bundy Bass Clar--Help me understand this instrument!

Please help! I know nothing of clarinets (I'm a flute player). I might purchase a vintage wood Bundy B Flat Bass Clarinet (long story). It was played by a professional, never a school.

My questions to you are: What are the general thoughts on vintage Bundy Basses? I think this is about 30 years old. I'm told it has no cracks and is in great playing condition. I will go look at it if you guys give me the green light (it is a long drive and I have a busy week, I don't want to spend half a day on this if the general feeling is it couldn't be worth it).

WHat do I look for? Even though I don't play clarinet, I'm sure I could give it a blow and finger around a bit.

What are the pitfalls? How do I wrap my head around this? This fellow is cleaning out his storage unit (which itself scares me...I hope the wood isn't damaged) so he is anxious to be rid of it soon.

Did they ever make wooden Bundy basses? I've only seen a few wooden Bundy Bb clarinets (and several wooden Bundy oboes) compared to their numerous plastic counterparts, but I've only ever seen plastic Bundy basses.

I didn't think Bundy ever made a wood bass clarinet either.

Sounds like two possibilities:

It's a plastic Bundy.

It's a wood Buffet. (Somewhat similar sounding name).

Never seen a wooden Bundy Bass either. But the plastic ones are not all that bad, especially when not beaten up in school wars. :-)

Let's assume it is a Bundy. What is the price?

One thing to look at - if it is an older instrument - Look at the top joint (left hand) backside - Does it have 1 or 2 register keys for the left thumb?

You already know what good and bad pads look like - inspect it carefully.

Look at the top crook - is it a single piece, or an adjustable (tune-able) 2-piece neck? The old Bundy horns mostly had a single piece neck, that has a very uncomfortable angle on it for playing.

I guess the first issue is to get clear on the make. A wood Bundy bass clarinet would be a real rarity. If it exists I would assume it was imported from France by George Bundy long long ago.

Those instruments will say "G.M. Bundy Paris" (as most likely know).

Kat,

Please check this thread. It may give you some insights into bass clarineticism.
