 Aspen 2012 Audition Excerpts
Author: Tony Park

Hi everyone. I am planning to send in an audition CD to Aspen for the upcoming summer program and was confronted with some issues regarding the bass clarinet audition repertoire (found @ http://www.aspenmusicfestival.com/index.cfm?method=sc.clarinet&swf_plugin=0,0,2):

1. SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op. 97 (toccata section solo to m. 170)

-If they are referring to Robert Schumann, I am not sure what they exactly mean because Schumann's third symphony does not include a bass clarinet in its instrumentation. Does anyone have any idea what they mean, then?

2. MEYERBEER: Les Huguenots (5th Act (cadenza starting on clarion F)]

-I have been looking for this excerpt but there hasn't been much success. Could anyone be kind and generous enough to e-mail me this excerpt or send me a link to a website that has one?

I have been constantly e-mailing them my questions here but I have not received any response from them. Thank you very much and I will look forward to your replies. Any insight will be deeply appreciated.

Call Luck's Music http://www.lucksmusiclibrary.com for the Meyerbeer. Also, why not contact Burt Hara directly with your questions on the Schumann.

I would assume it is William Schumann. If you can't find the part you can find the excerpt in the Drapkin symphonic repertoire book. It is in book 2.

Good luck.

If you continue to have an issue finding the Meyerbeer part, try posting on the IMSLP forum. Someone is bound to have access to it and willing to post it. Check any libraries or orchestras near you as well. I just checked the library database here. No local. Only piano reduction.

Tony - Check you email inbox (Nov 18th 12:13 am). I sent you the following excerpts on Thursday night:
Meyerbeer, Tosca Act 3 solo and Peter and the Wolf (in Bb).
For anyone looking for the Meyerbeer, remember that Google is your friend. I did a Google search with the words "Les Huguenots bass clarinet" and the *FIRST* Google return included a link to the bass clarinet solo:

You need the Sibelius Scorch plugin to view and hear the excerpt.

They completely blew the requirement. They list Robert Schumann, Symphony No. 3 in Eb, Op. 97. This is a correct citation but the work has neither a bass clarinet part, nor a toccata. They mean William Schuman (note: only one n), Symphony No. 3 (no designated key), whose last movement is a tocatta. Somewhere between the person who selected the excerpt and the one who entered it on the site, there was a miscommunication.

If anyone knows who's responsible for the list, they should be informed.

Best regards,
jnk

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Someone from Aspen finally sent me an e-mail today to tell me that the excerpt is by William Schuman.

That's pretty silly considering that Robert never wrote anything for bass clarinet at all. They even spell their last name slightly different. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Obviously William - if you don't know of the excerpt for that, you aren't ready for Aspen.
