 FUN SOLOS FOR OUR CONDUCTOR
Author: Roxann
Date:   2023-07-06 22:29

The Boise Community Band's conductor is a clarinetist. This summer, I challenged her to play Immer Kleiner. She accepted the challenge and we all had fun. I'd like to find a FUN solo for her to play next summer. Do you have any suggestions? By "FUN" I mean something a bit unusual that the audience would love and that we would enjoy accompanying.

Not really a solo, or even a novelty number there is Leroy Anderson's Clarinet Candy. There is a version on YouTube where the 1st clarinetist takes a really high note solo at the end. At least it's a crowd pleaser.

How about Ralph Hermann's "Clarinet On the Town"?

Slowoldman,

Thanks for the introduction to "Clarinet On the Town" - what a delightful piece! It immediately sounded like a 1960s tune to me - and when I went to digging, I found a source that says the piece is from 1963...do you happen to know if this is correct?

The song (to me) has the sound/feel of many of the musical production from the 50s and 60s.

Pretty cool!

Fuzzy,

1963 sounds right. I played it as a high school senior in 1969.
Fun piece, medium difficulty. A light crowd-pleaser.

Pie in the Face Polka - Mancini from "The Great Race" Arr for band by Johnny Vinson is a lot of fun. It can be a solo or a clarinet section feature.
