 Never heard this before

Hi,
I never heard what I'm about to post come up before.
Never before has my instructor ever talked about how we get past all the notes, rhythm, tempo, and all the other things, into what the heart of music really is.
In simpler terms, what does playing clarinet mean to you? For me, it keeps me going through the grieving process and helps me deal with the facts having a chronic condition presents. Not to mention the joy it brings, of course. ;)

It is hard to describe, but what playing the clarinet meant to me can pretty much be concluded by my favourite clarinet player-Artie Shaw

"You got an instrument that is made of... wood. It's got keys and holes in it. You tries to play it, you tries to play, you tires to manipulate these flimsy keys, with your throat, your muscle, your what they call it embouchures. Trying to make somethin' happen that's never happened before. It doesn't happen too often, when it does it beats everything" Artie Shaw in "Quest for Perfection"

For me? It's a mix of when it just "hits" as far as sound, and I love seeing the progress. I like when a mix of instruments gets that piece sounding JUST right and I was a piece of puzzle (LOVE playing small group stuff, one per part sorta stuff).

And I love seeing the progress. I don't always see it right away, but after a year or two I'll stumble across a piece of music that gave me trouble many moons ago, and I'll run it over and it'll be easier, less problematic. Seeing that I've progressed makes me feel good, shows me my work wasn't for nothing, and just in general makes me feel good. I like forward progress.

I suppose what you're talking about is GREAT music making with a capital "G."

Since all we have to work with is; louder/softer, faster/slower, shorter/longer; you'd think this would be an easy answer.

For me (of late) I believe there is too much "stuff" in the way with the instrument we began playing from youth (in our case the clarinet). So when I stop to study these mysteries, I listen to great singers of the past or legendary pianists and violinists. I try to really follow along with their phrases and dynamics and unearth some discernible pattern or formula rather than attempt to copy a specific phrase from a specific piece. In all honesty, it is still quite a mystery, but this should form the basis for anyone's quest.

Of what you speak is a very fundamental Zen concept.

For that brief instant in the present moment, your very essence unites with that perception of sound and results in a feeling...pleasant, neutral or unpleasant. Most of us wish to "cling" to that pleasant or neutral feeling, which in turn, creates craving for that feeling, resulting in dissatisfaction and "suffering." Understanding that that moment arises and passes away gives us insight into our pain, grief, etc which also arises and passes away. Music, thus, becomes a vehicle for peace.

My Father used to say that you cannot think about your problems while you are playing the clarinet.
