Does anybody know if there is a place on the web where I can get the Bb version of the Peter and the Wolf Excerpt from 21-21. (up the tree)?

I don't have a copy of Peter and the Wolf, but to transpose from Eb to Bb clarinet is pretty easy: write it up a perfect 4th.

A google search for "music manuscript paper" reveals many sites offering downloads of free printable paper.

P&tW is for clarinet in A, not clarinet in Eb. To play an A part on the Bb, go down a half step. The passage is hard either way, though; most of us don't practice augmented triads anywhere near as often as we probably should.

Both A and Bb parts are included in the orchestral set.

My part that I use every time my orchestra does Peter and the Wolf is actually in Bb and is published by Kalmus (who also publish the part in A). You might want to contact Kalmus to see if they still sell this part in Bb.
Because of copyright issues I imagine you will be hard-pressed to find a downloadable Bb version on the web, but it is an excellent idea to play this excerpt on Bb. You could of course save time and money by simply writing out the excerpt in Bb.

I have an old Russian score of Peter and the Wolf in which the clarinet part is in concert pitch. The possibility exists that because of the presence of a printed concert low C# for the clarinet when the cat theme appears, a publisher decided the part had to be in A so that the low C# could be produced (low E on A clarinet). Thus the whole part got transposed into A.

Sometimes the transposition of clarinet parts, when extracted from the score, is undertaken by the editor/publisher, and not the composer.

Boosey publishes the part in A and A alone. This, as far as I'm aware, is the official publication as they own Prokofiev's copyrights. Im surprised that Kalmus publish a Bb part. The part is more than playable on the A.

Here it is in A. http://www.ocl.ch/uploads/20110831_Prokofiev_PierreetleLoup.pdf

It's difficult either way. Regardless of which clarinet you use, you'll need to be able to play it from the printed part, so you might as well to do it now.

The solo is short enough to memorize, and any player good enough to get the principal's job in an orchestra good enough to play PATW will already have it engraved into muscle memory.

It isn't clearly indicated in Ken's posting, but the eighth note on beat two of the "nervoso" first complete measure should be a G, not the B that is printed.

Duxburyclarinetguy,

If you're still here, please e-mail me (I clicked on your name but no e-mail address came up, so I don't know if you're still here). If you (or someone else) has the parts, please drop me an e-mail. I'm searching for a friend prepping for an audition.

Thanks!
