Pete Fountain's version of Darktown Strutter's Ball is my warmup song.

Song. Currently one of the Gymnopédies. Then some work on Bach's Cello Solo to wake up the fingers.

D S B is great, Hans, what key ? C, F, G ? I like a few bars of 76 Tmbs, starting on G, puts it in C, doesn't it, a good over-the-break "review" . Don"

Thanx, Mark, Don

For technical warm up songs, I use the 37th Rose study (not etude) from the Artistic Studies book edited by Hite. It gets the fingers moving and moving together. It is a long compilation of arpeggios. Fun if you can play it through, frustrating if you can't.

Hi Don,

It's in F, from a chart that claims "as recorded by Pete Fountain" on Coral Record CRL 57334.

Regards,
Hans

I played for a wedding where the grooms father was Issac Stern. He played for the ceremony and his warm-up tune before playing in the church........."Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

[yes, it was THE Issac Stern, world famous violin viruoso]

TKS, Hans, looks like a goodie, not too tough,at least until the altissimo parts later on, anymore the clarion is where I dwell! Quite an experience, Wm., an "unforgettable" personality/violinist PRO. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Start off with the best music you know, making your very best sound.

Begin gently. Ralph McLane used the Brahms Lullaby for warmup and for testing reeds and instruments.

Don't just play. Sing. Make music.

I use songs a lot. I like to use the meandering line from "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" as a major scale warmup. It'll really wake you up in B and F#.

Dizzy Gillespie's "Bebop" makes a good minor warmup. I also like Dizzy tunes like "Old Man Rebop", "Ray's Idea", and "That's Earl, Brother" as ear warmups. They make very good puzzles to work. "Voices of Spring" also appeals to me in that vein.
