Hi,
Very nice work. Terry Horlick has done some great case work and posted pictures on the BB.
What are the outside dimensions for the case? I'm tryting to find one that I can use with my eefer and beefer plus cover with my really nice Olathe cover.

One suggestion, not related to just clarinets. Insure, Insure, Insure. What you have there is a highly visual receptical for some sort of expensive toy that somebody would love to get their hands on. Many photographers use cases of this nature and feel urged to chain them to their wrists when traveling. Lovely work by the way.

That looks just like the Bb/A cases I make out of Canadian Tire tool boxes. The cases are $30 CDN and then you get some foam and velvet. When you cross the border (US/CDN) with them they are construed as gun cases, nobody believes they are full of clarinets.

you don't even know you should ask.

Beautiful case!! Can she do the same thing for just the Bb and A clarinets??
I have a double case but it doesn't have much room for all my "stuff" and I also can't find a protective cover to fit it. My clarinets are changing temp. way too much for me. They get cold and we know that isn't good. How well is it insulated?
I've seen some nice double cases but I want one that will hold the 4 barrels and 2 mouthpieces. I also want room for my extra ligs, reeds, tuner, swab........ Right now I carry most of that in a seperate case. Two bags aren't much fun to carry to orchestra rehearsal every week.

Not if it's aluminum with foam lining, which many such cases are.

Beautiful work. I thought of doing something like this for a Bb/A pair after seeing a similar single-clarinet case on ebay, but decided I could never get the interior to come out so nicely. Is Suzy wiling to give up her trade secrets? Is it a velvet lining over carved foam inserts?

She does nice work. I have two cases exactly like this and use them for camera equip. I saw an even nicer one the other day with rounded corners at Office Max(or was it Depot?) for about the same price.

Wowser, I spent my free time yesterday working on a new sax quartet and this thread explodes. Here are the answers to your question; I'll try to get them all.
1. The case approximately 18" by 13" by 6" and weighs just under 11 pounds fully packed. It looks good even though I spilled wood stain and banged it about for about ten years before we repurposed it. :o)
2. I forgot to mention there is a velvet-covered foam pad that goes between the accessory panel and the instruments. You can kinda see it in the picture, stowed behind the accessory panel.
3. Suzy has also finished the inside top that is grey in the picture with black velvet after the picture was taken.
4. It is based on the multi-case on the web that uses foam, spray adhesive to do the placement of the fabric to the foam, glue gun for the foam to the case and velvet. It is indeed the Terry Horlick site at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/thorlick/cases.
5. The velvet is actually a stretch velvet which is easier to work with and the black color is very forgiving.
My wife really enjoyed the project, but then she does stuff like wedding dresses, upholstery and furnture for fun too.

Very nice case. The box is the most expensive part, though. Count on paying $70-$100 or more. My mundane case was $70 from Specialized Products. You can also get them from Jenson Tools.
Where did your wife get the plush? The only place around here, Minnesota Fabrics, does not seem to carry it.

Ralph, as I said earlier this simple tool case cost $20 at home depot here in Seattle. HarborFreight.com has a similar box for around $28.
See if there is another fabric store in Minnesota that carries stretch velvet or, in a pinch, polar fleece would work.

MFJ Inc., who makes ham radio equipment, just started marketing a similar case for I think $35, although the one you used is deeper.

A possible source for good, sturdy cases of a multi-inst size, is from an estate sale, where I've seen [and bot] slightly used brief cases for $ 5-10, Don

Ralph, my sister from Minneapolis is visiting Seattle this week. She sez to check JoAnn fabrics because they have a bigger selection. You should be able to find stretch velvet there in a variety of colors.

Nice job - i've been looking for good small Bb+Eb cases for years (i also occasionally play oboe!) and have spent lots of money and not got what i was looking for. Three weeks ago i decided to make a new double Eb & Bb case to take on a band trip. I had a small briefcase i wasn't using and it worked out really well. I have tried this before but previously the case was too big and heavy. I used packing foam cut to shape and covered it with velvet then removed the briefcase pockets attached to the lid and replaced it with a sheet of velvet covered foam. I'll try and remember to take some photos tomorrow and post them here so you can see what it looks like. Being a perfectionist i'm sure i'll be making more cases in the future - i've yet to find the perfect foam/technique for inserting the velvet!!

How on earth did you make the nooks to keep the instrument inside? did you just cut a piece of foam and went from there? or did you take it from an old clarinet case, cut out the plastic bindings, and insert them with a new cover? too bad you don't have a step by step picture process of how you did it. i'd like to see that

Whatever you do, don't forget to "notch" the foam at the ends of the joint openings This allows you to gather the excess lining (which in the cavity is needed to accommodate the "hole" for the joint) and put it "out of the way" without having to worry about stretch fabric and the like.

Apparently they've listened to the marketing because it's 1) way cheaper ($12.99) and 2) advertised for instruments and photo gear. The dimensions are 11-1/2'' x 7-1/2'' x 4-1/2''.
