 Re: Concerto Recordings

I have located an mp3 recording of Karl Stamitz's 3rd clarinet concerto available for free download. Start at:

http://www.karadar.com/Mp3composer/Default.htm

Click on "S" in the alphabet at the top of the page. Then click on "Stamitz, Karl" from the list of names that appear. That will give you a list with the three movements of the concerto. From here, follow the instructions (you're on your own). You will have to register (but it's free and all you do is create a username and password). You will eventually find yourself at a website at an Italian university (in English). You create a playlist at that website (its's a little fussy so it may take a few attempts) and when you ask it to download you are transferred to another site. At this point, you are asked a trivia question about music. Either these questions are ridiculously easy or ridiculously tricky, I couldn't tell which. In any case, it doesn't matter because you are admitted whether you get the answer right or wrong. Your playlist should show up at this point and if you click the download button by one of the movements, the download process should begin.

The good news is that it's free and the performance and recording (at least the first movement of the Stamitz) is very high quality. Also, they have some interesting items. A search on "clarinet" yielded, among other things, the Kurpinski Clarinet Concerto, the Strauss Duet Concertino and the Pfitzner Sextet for Clarinet, String Quartet and Piano.

The bad news is that the site is extremely slow. The first couple of times I tried to use it, it timed out on me while I was trying to log in. I finally got it to work last night. The third movement of the concerto is about 4 Mbytes. It took about an hour to download. The first movement is 12+ Mbytes. I started the download, went away, came back three or four hours later and it was done.

But, if you really want a free copy. There is one out there.

Best regards,
jnk
