Are there any recordings of Stamitz's Concerto No. 3 (1st or 3rd movement) on the internet that I can listen to for free?

Jenny

If I remember right, you are a dedicated clarinetist (All-State band, right??). You probably take lessons then, check with your teacher. If he /she doesn't have it, then they can direct you to someone/someplace that does. Also check out a local public library or even better, a university music library for that recording. Happy Hunting!!! Good Luck!!!

I believe she meant Carl Stamitz not Johann?

I think it is Carl Stamitz, but I'm not entirely sure. It only says Stamitz Concerto No. 3. I'll have to make sure. Thanks!

It is Carl (Karl) Stamitz -- my mistake -- Johann only wrote 1 concerto for clarinet as far as I know. I've located another site that claims to have the Karl Stamitz No. 3 but I haven't figured out how to work the download yet. If I can make it work, I'll report back.

Another source is: http://www.naxos.com

They have this work plus many other (1000's of) recordings. If you register for free, you can listen to about the first 25% of each movement. For $20 per year, you can listen to the complete versions.

There is a midi version of the K. Stamitz Concerto No. 3 here:

http://www.classicalarchives.com

Search composers for Stamitz.

Best regards,
jnk

Here's the first movement (nicely done, I might add), with piano:

Just scroll down the page until you see the "Play" button. You need Real Player to play this one.

According to the classical archives, it says that Stamitz's Concerto No. 3 is in Bb Major? Is that true? Someone said it was in Eb Major. Which key is it in?

I have located an mp3 recording of Karl Stamitz's 3rd clarinet concerto available for free download. Start at:

http://www.karadar.com/Mp3composer/Default.htm

Click on "S" in the alphabet at the top of the page. Then click on "Stamitz, Karl" from the list of names that appear. That will give you a list with the three movements of the concerto. From here, follow the instructions (you're on your own). You will have to register (but it's free and all you do is create a username and password). You will eventually find yourself at a website at an Italian university (in English). You create a playlist at that website (its's a little fussy so it may take a few attempts) and when you ask it to download you are transferred to another site. At this point, you are asked a trivia question about music. Either these questions are ridiculously easy or ridiculously tricky, I couldn't tell which. In any case, it doesn't matter because you are admitted whether you get the answer right or wrong. Your playlist should show up at this point and if you click the download button by one of the movements, the download process should begin.

The good news is that it's free and the performance and recording (at least the first movement of the Stamitz) is very high quality. Also, they have some interesting items. A search on "clarinet" yielded, among other things, the Kurpinski Clarinet Concerto, the Strauss Duet Concertino and the Pfitzner Sextet for Clarinet, String Quartet and Piano.

The bad news is that the site is extremely slow. The first couple of times I tried to use it, it timed out on me while I was trying to log in. I finally got it to work last night. The third movement of the concerto is about 4 Mbytes. It took about an hour to download. The first movement is 12+ Mbytes. I started the download, went away, came back three or four hours later and it was done.

But, if you really want a free copy. There is one out there.

Best regards,
jnk
