 Gonzalez With My Setup?
Author: Amanda S

I currently play on a Vandoren M13 mouthpiece with a Rovner(dark) ligature. At the time being, I use Vandoren 3.5s with this setup. I'm fed up with getting boxes of duds with Vandoren, and now want to try Gonzalez. With the setup I have, should I try the FOFs or the cut? What sizes? Being just a high school clarinetist, I would trust any opinions y'all might have.
Thank you sooooo much,
Amanda

Hi Amanda,

Start with an FOF 3.5. If they're too soft, then 3.75's. Definately stay with the FOF's. If you have any questions, you can call me in the office.

Happy tooting!

You will see with the Gonzalez that the cane is superior looking. No large dark lines running up the sides like with the Vandoren.

Yes I am really fed up with Vandorens, try Gonzalez FOF. I prob would suggest 3.75 with an M13, but maybe you should start with 3.5

If you use thin blank vandorens, I'd use thin blank Gonzalez (RC or "Regular Cut"). If you use V12s, I'd use the FOFs. From my experiences, same size or a quarter higher should do the trick.

i had to go a quater size down from my v-12's, from 4 to 3.75 on gonzalez. I tried 3.5 and they were very very weak for me.

I think the variation we're getting in recommended sizes is due to the variation in strengths within "one size" of vandoren. For instance, a box of V12 3.5 probably ranges anywhere from a 3.2 to a 3.7 within those ten reeds. So those of us that are recommending a quarter strength difference either way probably felt more comfortable with the harder or softer V12s from the box (not to say that the others didn't play, but maybe our 'performance quality' reeds were of the harder strength, or lower strength, or middle, etc.)

Phil Shapiro (who posted at the top of this thread) is the USA distributor (Davie Cane) for Gonzalez and Mozart reeds.

He knows more about these reeds than anyone else in the country.

Follow his advice...GBK

Love the Gonzalez reeds!
You need to do the proper "break in" with them though. To me they seem to be a little softer when first played and then play at their marked strength from there after. I've heard this from other people too. Don't just put the reed on and play it until it dies. Let it have it's proper break in and you'll be happier with the end result.
I use a Lomax Elite A1G with a Rovner dark and the Gonzalez FOF's 3.5's or 3.75's. Perfect!!

Thanks for the advice. I was about to order some, but my lesson teacher gave me a Zonda to try(size 3.5...letter "I", I think?), so I
m trying out those. Since they're in the Gonzalez family, how do they compare?
