taped chimney

I acquired a clarinet from Ebay (I know, buyer beware!). Other than some minor things that can be resolved, I am pleased with it. One thing that I am curiuos about is the third finger lower joint "D" or "G" key has a piece of dark tape inside the tone hole. It is real hard to notice unless you are peering into the tone hole. My initial reaction is it is probably hiding a crack or acting as a reinforcement to the crack. Has anyone encountered something like that? I am not going to remove it, but am curious.

I wouldn't presume to know the tape's significance...but can say that my clarinet, which I bought new from Hans Moennig in 1961, had tape in one of the holes in the lower joint. I presume that Moennig put it there to help intonation. jbjr

Joseph's right on. In most cases the tape is put in the chimney to assist intonation. There's an excellent description of the technique in Larry Guy's book on clarinet intonation (check http://www.vcisinc.com for the book.

You will also find that people will use things like fingernail polish inside the tone holes for the same purpose. Tape tends to come loose with time and moisture.

Also, since the low A on my instrument was very, very sharp, my teacher suggested to put wax or tape in the tone hole. I would assume that these notes have the same intonation problems and the tape is just to flatten the notes.
