 Patricola Eb
Author: Aussie Nick

I was wondering if someone could tell me the RRP of a new Patricola Eb clarinet (Grenadilla Rosewood). Mine is 2 years old and I am looking at selling it quite soon and am not sure what it would be worth after 2 years. I'm only asking through this board because I can't remember what price I payed for it when it was new. It was bought whilst trading in (selling) my old pair of clarinets, and so there the price of the Patricola Eb was taken off the old pair I was selling etc etc... and I have no idea what I payed for it.

I have a Patricola Eb that plays pretty well in tune. I have to be careful in the throat range (G-Bb) because a slight increase in lip tension will produce a large increase in sharpness, particularly on Bb. I believe this may have something to do with the Stubbins type Bb booster mechanismn. But if I maintain a constant lip tension the horn plays fairly well in tune up to the altissimo register at which point I have to increase the lip tension to bring the notes up to pitch. But I have to do this on Bb cl. as well so I don't think it's a problem with the horn. My main instrument is baritone sax so extremely high notes are always a little dicey for me. It would be interesting to do a comparison test between the Patricola and one of the top line Buffets (maybe the RC model). I considered getting the RC before I bought my Patricola but it's pretty pricey and doesn't have the articulated G#/C# like the Patricola. But I've been pretty happy with the Patricola. I think it's a good horn for the money (about $1600 here in the states), but I've heard that there is a good bit of inconsistancy from instrument to instrument so it would be a good idea to try several before buying.

I've been told the RRP in Australia for the Patricola Eb is $4100. Seems a bit steep compared with the US$1600. Are you talking about the RC or RC Prestige. Not many people seem to know that the RC Eb's exist. That is what I'm after. Can't really afford the extra money for the prestige.

Nick-

Lately, the Eb that I have tried, the new R13 Eb clarinet is the best of them out of all the trials. They are doing something different, i don't know what but those horns are awesome.

I think it was the RC Prestige that I was looking at. Whichever one has the left hand Eb/Ab key. I wish the big four manufacturers would offer Eb clarinets with the extra keywork (left hand Eb/Ab, articulated G#/C#) like the Patricola. Anyone who wants the extra keywork is pretty much limited to the Patricola. As I said, I'm happy with my Patricola but more choices would be a good thing.
