Does anyone know what the quality of the Buffet E11 Eb clarinet is like compared to the R13 Eb clarinet? I have heard that this student model is close to the professional model. Other than the wood, silver plating, and undercut tone holes are there any differences in the E11 Eb and the R13 Eb? I assume bore size may be different. If anyone has any playing time on both could you please tell me your opinions? I would like to know what good Eb clarinet mouthpieces are out there including barrels.

If you do a search here using Ell, E11 E flat, etc., you will find numerous posts/replies relating to your query.
Since the 'selling' price of a new E11 hovers around $1,000, you may want to consider a used higher end/differnt model. Some issues to consider may be your intended purpose/usage, finances of course, new vs used.
Buffet specs indicate the same bore size (13.10, poly-cylindrical)and undercutting but the pitch is different (440 for the R13, 442 for the E11).......the difference being a 1mm longer bbl on the R13. Both models have silver plated keywork but the R13 is preplated with copper
Also, the E11 has stained Grenadilla vs premium and, Valentino pads vs GORE-TEX and cork.
Although I have 3 eefers; a Buffet, Yamaha 681 and a Selmer from 1959 and recently gave a friend a gift of my 1974 Selmer, I've not had any personal experience with the E11. I did, however, try an E11 'C' and didn't care for the keywork nor sound (compared to a friend's R13C).

Personally. There is a huge difference between these two models. The Eb E11's I have tended to be compleately out of tune with itself. It's not compleately balanced. It's really just a good begining model in my opinion.
On the other hand I am a very big fan of the (newer) regular R13 Eb clarinet. They generally tend to have a better more fluid tone that resembles a Bb clarinet instead of that shrill piccolo like tone other lower models have. The only complaint I have about the R13's that I have tried were that the high C's were consistantly sharp, but that could easily be taken care of. Last time I checked though, Buffet R13 Eb's are only avalible in nickle plate. I could be wrong.

It's been my experience that the Eb clarinet is hard to play well in tune and you should get the very best one you can afford if you're going to be sticking your neck out. I would stay away from the E-11 unless you're going to be buying it for a school. If it's going to be a professionally used clarinet, get the R-13. There's a huge difference.

At this point I'm just seconding everyone else's advice but: forget the E11 unless you're buying it for an undersized beginning clarinetist (in which case it would be a great thing). I tried a few at Woodwind and Brasswind about 1 1/2 years ago and quickly realized there would be no prayer of playing one reasonably in tune at all.
Additionally, i went through many Buffet R-13's. I was pretty unsatisfied with them as well. I was lucky to find an amazing Selmer Recital. A friend who plays more Eb than I who's in the Charleston Symphony was blown away by how well in tune it plays (compared to her Buffet R-13-not sure if she has a Prestige).
In anycase, they're hell to play regardless!

Antoine, I own a e-11 eb clarinet and am very pleased with it, though I feel that it may be a fluke as far as e-11 e-flats go. It seems that I usually don't go for the sound of the e-11's, but in it's case I have been very pleased. It's tone, intonation and quality are very close to that of the r-13(heck, as far as i'm concerned there is a vast amount of differences quality wise between even the r-13's). I would really recommend play testing many ebs and ask a clarinetist friend (with a tuner) which sounded the best to them (on top of your own opinion).
