Oberlin people : What do you think of the school
Author: James

I am considering auditioning at oberlin and I was curious about the school. Richard Hawkins teachers there so I know they have a good teacher but I was curious to the overall school. Like how does it compare musically over all perhapes compared to schools like UM, Eastman, USC?

well i am an obie grad. I was there under Larry McDonald. I can't really tell you much about Mr. Hawkins other than I have heard many wonderful things.
What i can tell you about is Oberlin. It is an unique place, and a wonderful one to do your undergraduate at. The conservatory is top notch and as an added plus no graduate students(and only 2 artists Dp folk while i was there). With no graduate students you get many more chances to play in the 4 major ensembles. The level of talent there while i was there was great. The studio had Ken Robertson in it while i was there and he was unbelievable. The brass department tended to be a bit weak and i am sure it still does. Oberlin is a great place to experiment with new ideas and it is incouraged.
The rest of the school is a very respectable college and the conservatory musicians are incouraged to take as many classes(or just have a major) in the college as well. This is possibly one of the biggest differences between other conservatories and Oberlin. You graduate with a very well rounded degree. The academics I find tend to be a shade above other schools. But the downside is that if you have to spend more time with your nose in a book, you spend less time in a practice room. So you have to make up for that somehow.
Feel free to ask me any questions you might have and I will be more than happy to answer them. Good luck with the auditions!!!
Hope this has helped.

What he said...

LOL!

I was at Oberlin a long long long time ago (well not as long ago as some...)...

I really found that it (for me) was the perfect school. I got in the playing I needed as well as the growth as a person I needed at that point as well.

I also studied with Larry McDonald...Man, is he wonderful!

Anyhow, the academics are top-notch, and the Conservatory is also phenomenal!
