 resonator pads

Can someone please give me a solid answer about the use of resonator pads? My SILVER KING has them on the four lower keys.
What is the purpose and why aren't they used on any other keys?
Thanks...
John

John, I don't think the reso pads are common - even on a Silver King. I would assume that resos on the lower four serve the same purpose they do on a sax - to add projection and character to the tone. I would assume that your Silver King was set up that way to cut through in a combo setting. I bet it can wail!! I don't think you could get resos on the other pads - too small.

Since I've never seen clarinet reso pads, I'm actually curious if your lower four aren't sax pads. Mind you, I'm not a tech . . . just a wannabe.

In my opinion any answer would have to be a guess, John, and Fred's analysis is a good one. Perhaps someone just wanted reso pads on those keys or maybe they were the only thing available at some time in its life. Sax pads aren't ordinarily used for clarinets but plain kid skin is not too uncommon, especially on metal horns. Opinions vary but I don't find they make much difference in the sound of a clarinet. Whatever the reason for them being there, they'll likely outlast bladder pads :)

LeBlanc is issuing the Opus with Resos on the lowest four pads.

You really must wonder if there's a genuine contribution from these... even the sax community has voiced some doubt about this.

One possible benefit: they would keep that big expanse of pad skin from getting loose and buzzing. Heck . . . I might be willing to try that myself.

Resonator pads are to make the lower notes more clear.

Gawd, I hate it when people use an "Anonymous" handle. There are so many of them to keep straight ...

In any case, no one would want a "muffled" tone out of their lower no6tes, so if resonatiors make the tone clearer then everpne would use them.

Perhaps "clearer" is a bad choice of words?

I doubt that the metal in the middle of a pad has anything to do with resonating on a clarinet.

I suspect the purpose is entirely to secure the centre of the pad in an attempt to make the pad thickness around the sealing circle more stable, hence more reliable sealing.
