 clarinet quartet music

Hello all!

My university has given me the opportunity to start a clarinet quartet this year. (3 sopranos and me on the bass, btw.) The first semester went great, except we have hardly any music. I'm in to process of applying for a grant to order some new music. It seems that there's very little original music for clarinet quartet, and that most of the music is trascribed from other compositions. Are there any pieces out there I should try to order? We already have Waterson's Grand Quartet and Desportes French Suite. (Both awesome works!) Thanks.

Francesca - good for you - lovely combination. quite a bit of music for this scoring.

First go to this BB's homepage > compositions > instrument number 4 > clarinet(3)and bass.

Also I would highly recommend :-

Grundman - Caprice for Clarinets - (great starter for a programme)
Ferenc Farkas - Ancient Hungarian Dances (needs eefer player with tiny nimble fingers)

Very Special Piece :-

Alfred Uhl - Divertimento - (demanding but fabulous - at times sounds like 5 or 6 players due to the sympathetic harmonics produced by the clever combination of notes - poss more of a "players piece" than an "audience piece" but we've had no complaints !)

Additional recommendations for light tuneful stuff, think about the Comus Edition - arrangements by Gareth Brady of Misty, Yesterday, and many more - great to play and superb for ensemble playing.

Also, the Ardito Publications of Gershwin numbers arr by Art Marshall.

If you get serious about clt4tet stuff you may find an eefer would be an advantage later (but try not to fight about who plays it !)

Actually there are lots of new pieces for this combination but they only appear on CD's as they were privately commissioned for specialist pro 4tets. A few sax 4tet pieces have been adapted for clts.

Keep us posted as to your progress,

BobT

Hi, I would also recommend:

Elliott Carter's "Canonic Suite" for 4 clarinets in Bb
Paul Harvey's "Quartet" for 3 Bb and bass clarinets
Ferenc Farkas' "Scenes from Hungary" Eb, 2Bb, Bass
Alan Hovhaness' "Divertimento" 3Bb, Bass
Kurt Weill's "Music from 3 Penny Opera" 3Bb, Bass

Just out of curiosity, what school are you doing this at?

Good luck,

Brad

Ten British Folk Songs arr. by Chris Allen arre very nice to listen to and play. They are not difficult. Desportes wrote other nice quartets, among them are Normandy and Italien Suite.

Scott Joplin Portrait arranged by Bill Holcombe 3Bb, Bass, Musicians Publications
Elegy on an Irish Folk Melody, Edward Yadzinski, 3Bb, Bass
Schezetto, Pavane and Gopak by Gordon Jacob, Emerson Edition

There are a lot more.

Brad, (and all) I'm at Colorado State University in lovely Fort Collins. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I'm asking for about $250 for the semester. (Does this seem like a lot, a little, just right?) That'll buy 20 pieces. I'm securing bids from sheetmusicplus.com, jwpepper.com, and a local music store. Wish me luck in convincing the higher-ups that we need this music.
