 Contemporary Christian Clarinet Music
Author: Chris
Date:   2003-01-04 01:55

A student of mine is seeking some contemporary Christian music for clarinet and piano. Although I've done some searching on the web, I figured that someone might be far more knowledgeable with this.

Does anyone have any good leads or suggestions for books or sheet music? Even a website to search, would be helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Try the Barnes and Noble website. I've bought a lot of sheet music for clarinet and piano off their site. I've also bought a lot of new and really good stuff off eBay.

Actually, I just clicked onto the sheetmusic.com logo on this page and found several really good ones you might be interested in trying.

Chris,

Go to a Christian Book store and purchase a contemporary hymnal or any available song or music book. The song or music books will probably have more complete multi-instrument oriented music. These stores can be found in many small towns and, certainly, every major city.

I have a couple of actual hymnals from churches of different denominations and, save the fact that they are not very complex in nature (they don't usually have complete orchestral scores in them) they have many features which may be of interest to anyone who wants to play Christian music.

The last hymnal I acquired was a few years ago, when a local Methodist church was closing its doors and I went there for something related to my work. When I found out they were closing, I asked if I could purchase a hymnal. They asked the head honcho (whatever the Episcopals call their clergy) and he just gave me one.

Neat book.

Chris,

I just found two of the books I have:

One is the Broadman Hymnal, the other is the Methodist Hymnal.

There are more, but I am not sure where they are right now. We have more than 4,000 books in our library, and much of it is not well organized.

These two books are older than what you would look for, but I thought they would give you some ideas as to where you might start looking, besides, there may be more modern editions than the ones I have.

Peter,

Perhaps you already know this but "Contemporary Christian" is actually a genre or style which, to me often has elements of country, soft rock, and/or pop with modernized Christian-based text. Personally, I wouldn't look for it in "generic" hymnals. I first encountered it a few years ago when I played in a pit orchestra for a local church's Easter pageant.

Chris,

Since that first gig, a couple of churches have hired me pretty regularly to play for Christmas and Easter pageants/programs. There are some composers who seem to write quite a bit in this style, if not exclusively. One that comes to mind is Robert Sterling. If you search SheetMusic.com on his name, you will find a few pieces. I can't remember the names of any of the others but, if you contact the music director at your church or other churches in your area that do pageants, they will probably be able to give you some additional names.

Or, as Brenda suggested, you can use the link at the top of this page to sheetmusicplus.com. If you use the pull down menu to change from composer to composition and search on "contemporary christian" without the quotes, you'll get over 200 hits.

Best regards,
jnk

Jack,

You're right, of course, but I know some people (the priest in charge of the band at my church, for instance,) who have done some seriously modern things with both, the older and the newer standards and they sound great, even adding elements of all of the above that you mentioned. (...country, soft rock, and/or pop with modernized Christian-based text.)

The first time I heard "Father Charley's" band play at a youth mass (service) I thought I was at a pop/rock concert. It was strange, but not overdone towards the "rocky" side, and actually pretty good.

Those of you who have not heard Bare Naked Ladies (with Sarah McLachlan) do "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen," should do so. Of course, that's Christmas music and BNL has a lot of fun music, of which this is one piece, but still qualifies.

And the best places for "contemporary Christian music" I have found is still a well stocked Christian book store, although I would also encourage you to try sheetmusicplus.com, as a WWBB sponsor.

I also am a church musician and play with an international Christian orchestra as well. There are many, many good pieces of music out there. Go to the sheetmusic site and browse. If you don't find what you're looking for, go to Barnes and Noble.
