1.I'm disappointed that my Van Doren Optimum ligature has tarnished---how would be best to clean it?
2. I'm having great success with Gonzalez reeds---what other ligatures would be worth trying with them?

Use bakeing soda alluminum foil and hot water.
do a search on bakeing soda and get more detail than you will ever need. It's very quick and effective.

Why just string why not a shoelace? The ends don't fray. I always use a standard Vandoren or a Selmer depending on which case I open. They are really not as important as they are made out to be and they provide a lucrative little money earner for the makers.

Ahh, but Mark, they are every bit as imprtant as they are made out to be.
I've caught some that were so awful that they made my best clarinet and MP combination sound like crap!
I use Optimums almost exclusively, but I have many others (Hey, Arney, those are the ones my kids sneak off to school every time they need a couple of extra bucks!) and the difference between many of them is clearly notable.
More than one can work well for you, but most can have a different effect on your sound, control, and even reaching certain parts of registers may not be the same from one to the next.
