From time to time questions from students come up about good research sources for papers, etc. I noticed one on eBay today that I have in my library at home. It's a history of woodwind instruments that is very interesting and quite informative. I don't know this particular eBay seller, nor am I recommending participating in this auction--just saying this is a good one to have. I bought mine from Barnes and Noble's website and I think I only paid $12.95 for it--so that's something to consider if you want a copy.

It must have been good--the bidding is closed as some guy named "Charette" bought it.

Baines is one of the truly great source books. It's moderately technical, but if you're interested it has no end of information. It's equally good on flute, oboe and bassoon. IMHO, everyone should have a copy, particularly at the low selling price for the paperback edition.

Best regards.

Brenda - It sounds to me that you [and we posters] are suggesting that we should make up a comprehensive listing of "books" for reference to, #1 clarinet, #2 woodwinds [generally] , #3 all orchestral/band instruments, #4 ?? other insts. [piano/organ/etc, but not for guitar/keyboard etc?] . I have a goodly number of titles/authors at home and have become familiar with local [Okla.] library holdings and have had library-loan of some of the "harder-to-find" variety. Many of us routinely recommend Brymer, Lawson, Pino, Baines, Groves, Benade etc/etc to school/university inquirers, so I throw out the question/challenge to all, how might we accomplish this seemingly worthwhile task. THINK, Don

Don, you're welcome to do a list if you feel so compelled. I just like to mention them when they come to mind. It just seemed we have had a few technical type questions and research questions lately and books like this one are good to have around.

By the way, this book has fingering charts for the various woodwind instruments as well--very handy for the music major.

Baines is indeed a fascinating book. I first read a public library copy 30 years ago, and only recently got my own copy.

A little OT, I know, but I hate some of the things he says about the recorder.

He wrote a book about brass instruments too, but it is not as good.

I first found the book in the library and then when browsing at the Barnes and Noble store. I couldn't get it off my mind and found that every time I went to Barnes and Noble I would take it to the coffee shop with me. I finally decided it was the "right thing to do" to purchase my own copy.
