I played my gig at the nursing home today-- had very nice feedback. The swing tunes went over well. The clarinet is such a beautiful and expressive instrument. (even in the hands of someone like myself with very limited capabilities!)

I got the best reaction from some Goodman tunes--- Air Mail Special, You Turned the Tables on me. They also loved "Theres a Small Hotel." Older show tunes also went over well--- Thanks!

What sheet music/arrangements were you using?

I play in a band (called the Retro Swing Band) whose "mission" is to either rehearse on Monday afternoons, 1-3, or go out and play free concerts at local nursing homes or retirement centers. We are all retired from our "day gigs" and, therefore, have the time available plus a book of hundreds of arrangements owned by our member and leader--who also directs the local Shrinners dance band.

My point is for all of you "wont get my horn out of its case unless someone pays me to do it" kind of musicians, I strongly recommend you play just one nursing home gig and experiance the joy music brings to these elder citizens. Somebody once said that "it is more blessed to give than to receive" and from my personal experiance, that statement is "right on." The thanks that you will see in the appreciative eyes of your "shutin" audience will make you happy to be a musician, all over again.
