i wanna get a new microphone for my MD so that i can record myself.
Have any suggestions for a decent mic that's under $150?
is ebay a good place to look?
where else can i get a microphoen?

Try Music-123(www.music123.com) or Musicians friend (www.musiciansfriend.com).
Forget ebay, no way to tell what kind of junk they are selling. When you buy new you get a warrantee that will be backed by the above vendors. BTW $150.00 should get you a great mike.

I am using the Sony ECM-DS70P for my MD. It does a pretty good job of recording Clarinets. Cost is reasonable at around $75US. I got mine at the Good Guys chain here in CA because I needed it right away. It may be cheaper elswhere. It is very small and comes with an extension cable which you should use since it will pick up the occasional whirring of the MD unit if you plug the mike in directly.

Question: Am I reading this correctly that it IS possible to record directly onto the minidisc recorder by plugging a microphone into it; that is, no amplifier is needed?

That is correct (assuming that your mic doesn't need phantom power); if it does you'll need to provide the power supply.

The cheaper mics (like the Sony ones) use a intern battery as an alternative to phantom power. Some portable MD recorders (like the Sharp ones) deliver (allthough a small amount off) phantom power.

I’ve got a DAT recorder and a CD recorder but they are both line-level components designed for a stereo system. I wanted to record myself so I bought a cheap Behringer MX602A mixer with two microphone inputs, phantom power, and four other line level inputs for $59.99 at Musicians Friend. This thing is unbelievable for the price. It claims to be an ultra low-noise design and it definitely has absolutely no noise that I can hear.
I also bought two Nady CM 88 Cardioid Condenser Microphones for $49.99 each and I’ve been recording myself onto CD. These mics produce a very natural and realistic clarinet sound. In fact, I’ve been having fun with the mixer by recording myself with some those play-along music books that come with CD accompaniment. I feed the CD into the mixer while listening on headphones and playing into the microphone. The recording comes out sounding amazingly professional. Anyway, it’s a lot of fun.

Can you get a PZM? It's a Pressure Zone Microphone available from Tandy, the UK equivalent of Radio Shack.
It's cheap and ugly, being a 6" or so metal square with the mike stuck to the middle, but records very well. It sort of only looks at the sound in the few cubic mm around the mike, and so mostly avoids the big echoey room effect that you get anywhere short of a room lined with egg cartons and mattresses.
