 reed troubles?

Hello

I am going to an all-state competition soon, and I have been searching for a good reed to have ready to play with and found nothing that seems to work. Every reed (I use vandoren 3 1/2) seems to make a hissing sound in addition to the note I am trying to play. This sound gets to a point it sounds like my clarinet is sputtering out the note. Is this sound normal or is there a way to prevent it? I have tried to fix this problem by taking out my reed and wetting it well. I also take a cloth and run it through my clarinet to get out any excess water. This works for about a minute, and then halfway through the song it is making the same sound again. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thank you

Is the hissing sound audible to your audience as well as to you?

Is the hissing sound through the instrument, or out of the corners of your mouth?

Check the 'seal' and firmness of your embouchure.

I happen to like Glotin reeds, and, although I have not tried Gonzalez, several people, both here and at home, tell me they like Gonzalez reeds very much.

In fact, I just read a post from GBK in which he says he likes the Gonzalez reeds and, frankly, if GBK endorses them, they should, at least, be worth trying.

But I'd check my embouchure first.

If you currently have a music teacher whose opinion you respect, I'd consult him/her A.S.A.P., especially if you have an upcoming competition 'soon.'

I've known a few woodwinds players over the years who 'leak,' some of which have never been quite successful in completely eradicating the problem, but as long as the sound does not carry over to the audience, some seem to have grown reasonably accustomed to the fact that they 'leak.'

Not that they like it, not that they have quit trying to correct this issue, but some have just accepted it as part of their playing.

Maybe a reed that is a half step softer. When you are soloing you don't need to produce as much volume.
