Benny Goodman and vocalists Helen Ward and Martha Tilton achieved a level of perfection melding woodwind and voice that I don't think has been equaled. Any opinions?

Great clarinetist, great singers! I think Ward and Tilton had fairly different styles, but both sounded equaly as good with BG. I think Ward handled the hot tunes a tad better, though. Benny always managed to throw in a few licks behind the vocalist without being obtrusive . . . That takes some talent! Also, Benny could play very vocally, attributing to that "melding" you're talking about. I think he reached a similar effect with Jack Teagarden's singing and playing as well, possibly giving him the experience he needed playing with a good vocalist to attain such great results when he formed his own band.

I also love the blend between clarinet, vibes, and electric guitar that Benny, Hamp, and Christian achieved. They just blended so well when playing together that it almost sounded like one new instrument instead of three!

P.S. Happy New Year! :-D

WJK. you "ring my bell" re: BG, HW and MT. My [gift] book, "Benny, King of Swing", available in libraries?, has pics and good words about their and many other musical relationships, HW being said "most reliable", MT great, FL, MB and PP later than 1937. My "impressionable" MS College! days. TKS, Don

My personal favorite of the goodman Columbia era is the Solo flight record with Charlie Christian and the Sextet. Incredible ensemble and great soling all around....
