I have a Selmer Signet we bought back in the '60s from a newspaper want ad and I have often wondered how I could find out how old it really is. It is s/n 34800. Does anyone know a resource where I could learn about it's manufacture? I bombed out at Selmer's site.
Thanks

Jax,
Selmer has serial numbers posted for their Paris line, but not for their intermediate and student line. I don't know if contacting Selmer would yeild any results either.

I have a Selmer Signet Special which I am pretty sure was purchased around December 1960. Its serial number is 429xx.

>#25754 which was purchased new in 1955
>I purchased new a Signet Special in August of 1969. It is serial #72216
>I have a Selmer Signet Special I got new in about 1980 as a student (intermediate). Serial number: 151462

Unfortunately, the Selmer U.S.A. company happens to have particularly bad customer service.
Just about all the other companies I've dealt with are usually forthcoming with information to the consumer, but Selmer U.S.A. usually just tells you that whatever information you are looking for is kept at another site and it doesn't readily come up in their computers and they'll call you back in a few days, after they've had the opportunity to research it, which they never do (call you back, that is, and likely never research it, as well.)
I've been dealing with them for years and that's always been the case.
If you call them back in a week, or so, to find out what happened with your inquiry, first they put you on hold while they "find your inquiry," then they tell you the information is not available.
Sometimes if you insist, they manage to come up with it, if it's not too difficult, otherwise they can as much as get annoyed with you and tell you they'll keep it on file in case...
Signet serial numbers, in particular, happens to be one of those topics they don't want to deal with. I know!
At any rate, their customer service telephone number is:
1-800-348-7567
There used to be a lady there named Denise, who was more helpful than the rest, IMO.
I'll just add that Selmer was purchased, as an investment, by Phillips North America and it's subsidiary Magnavox over the period spanned by the 1970's. These are consumer electronics ventures and have nothing much to do with music. Enough said.
Good luck!
