 Replacing Pads
Author: Aussie Nick
Date:   2002-12-30 15:02

I think I need some pads replaced on my Bb Festival. As far as I know it has mainly Gortex pads on it at the moment. Should I stick to Gortex, or consider cork/leather etc... Are there any advantages to any of these? I need some of the trill keys on the upper joint replaced, and maybe the Eb/Ab on the lower joint.

Hi, Nick -
Not an easy call, but I can offer a "for what it's worth" opinion. I'd probably use what's on the horn now, if it were up to me, just for the sake of consistency. According to some, cork and leather will outlast several generations of bladder pads. My opinion however: if it's playing well now with Gortex pads, why change?

My preference is for leather. I have leather on my Yamaha, leather on my Uebel, likewise on my Boosey pair, my bassoon and of course all my saxes. Lasts longer and seats reliably.

As you know, I have cork and leather - but if Gortex is working for you and you haven't had substanial problems enough to want to change, stay with what you've relied upon and what you're used to. I found there difference between fish skin and getting cork and leather actually required some adjustment on my part - the feel was a little different to me.

Ferree's Tools (ferreestools@aol.com or www.ferreestools.com) sells leather pads. They list them under Alto/Bass Clarinet pads.

I don't stock leather pads so when I need them I get them from "my former employer's" music store. She is very good about letting me get supplies from her when necessary. She stocks the MyPad leather pads from Music Centre (Italy). Gordon (NZ) is more familiar with this company than I. We in the US can not buy directly from them, but have to go through sources, wholesalers. It is a very good pad and far superior to others I have seen. I think the US supplier is Fox. I would certainly recommend looking into this product if you go the leather pad route.

Also, Gortex pads, as far as I know only come in sets. I spoke with Francois Kloc about a year or more ago and he said they were trying to get to the point where they could supply the Gortex in separate pad sizes. I do not know if Buffet has done that yet.
