I got a serious problem. I recently received a information packet on an audition that I want to try for and the requirements require you to have 2 prepared solos of contrasting styles. I have already been working on "Fantasy Piece" by Schumann but I need suggestions for the second. But that is not the problem. The problem is that the audition is next week! I need some suggestions on a solo for a decent high school player. Thanks

Vanhall Sonata or one of the Stamitz Concertos (or are they Sonatas?)

Do something you know already. I think it's probably better to play something isn't a perfect choice very well rather than a piece which isn't prepared well enough. I don't know your playing but learning a standard repertoire piece so it's audition-ready in a week is very risky. What have you played in the past? Weber, Mozart and Stamitz are all safe for auditions and would be a good contrast to Schumann.
Good luck!

Hi,
I just auditioned for music college here in the UK. I know several friends who played the schumann and two of them both played part of the Poulenc Sonata and the first movement of the Weber Grand Duo.
I played the Brahms Second Sonata and the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina if that helps.
Best of Luck,
Rob

Thanks for the help. I decided to try my hand at the Stamitz Concertos and it is coming along great. I can't believe I learned all this in a week. I guess that shows what hard work can do eh?
