 clarinet bores !

Jean's latest post regarding her new acquisition of a big bore Rossi has sparked off a thought. Has anyone on the BB compiled a listing or catalogue of small bore clarinets and big bore models.

This would be a very informative list for those who really don't know what bore their instrument has - say if they've bought second hand or as an early model. This could be very important for choosing an appropriate mouthpiece for the future-cutting out mouthpieces that just should not be considered and saving time and frustration.

I have been told eg that Selmer's Centred Tone models changed from one to the other around mid 1950's. No doubt other manufacturers have done the same or the converse. From the general postings I gather quite a few of the "big" makers have differening bores in their ranges.

Would this be a viable project for someone more knowledgable than I ? -or would it be so detailed and complicated that it wouldn't be worth the energy. There could eg be an historical limit on it.

Just a thought - I'll now go and search for such a thread/list on the BB

I didn't think the Selmer CT's changed bore size during production, but I do know that the ones that after them did - The Series 9 is a fairly large bore clarinet, while the 9* has a small bore (apparently an attempt at coming out with some competition for Buffet's R-13 at the time).

It would be great if there was a "master list" at woodwind.org of clarinets and their bore sizes (and perhaps other info, such as whether the tone holes are undercut, and whether they have any extra keys or not) and a list of mouthpieces and their tip openings and facings!

Selmer provides data on their clarinets, including bore sizes, at
http://www.selmer.com.
The 10G bore listed is .574'; Recital - .563"; 10SII - .567"

Anyone is welcome to compile and verify such a list; I'll put it up when it's done.

I think significantly less valuable, as tip opening and facing (length, curve, rail width, tip rail width), chamber size, baffle, etc. is so variable as to be barely a guideline at all on how the mouthpiece will perferm, along with the fact that the simple listings are readily available in catalogs.

Good ? Bob49T, yes, quite a bit of model/bore size [dont forget the "modified bores" also] info has been discussed, look it up. I just now added a bit of info to Jean's ?, the Selmers I mentioned are CT's and a couple earliers, BT and RI, all large. However, as Mark points out, each must judge her/his playing facility and sound quality considering all of our variables. Luck, Don

Okay, someone going to take up the challenge for clarinet bores???
As Mark says the mouthpiece list would seem less helpful.

People have often called me a clarinet bore...but I digress.

Here's a contribution to anyone who wants to compile a list of bore sizes. LeBlanc says the bore on their Classic II is .580.

I think the smaller the bore, the more mellow.

I think the larger the bore, the brighter.

FWIW, the Leblanc LL has a 0.582" bore.

Please don't post the bores sizes here on the thread; the compiler (should one step forward - I nominate bob49t ! :) should have the sizes emailed directly to them.
