phase one, when Doris gets her oats
Author: contragirl

5 bucks to the first person that knows where that is from.

So I have started phase one in the overhaul of my sucky lil metal clarinet. I have completely demolished the rusted screws that were in there, but I got them all out... now my hands hurt really bad. Bah.

Now my question is, can the screws be replaced by regular modern clarinet screws, or were they different in the 60's? I hope they are the same!!

The screws, more than likely, will have to be made. You will have to determine the size of the drill rod and the thread used. This translates that you will have to find someone with a micrometer or pin gage set, and a thread pitch gage. Then you can buy the correct drill rod and die to make the new steels (rods).

Thanks to Mark for the more scholarly, and correct! ,answer. I must admit that I still don't "get" the meaning, however. But, there's lots of their lyrics that still escape me. Cheerios....

If currently available screws won't fit, and assuming that they are larger in diameter, I wonder if you could get a thread tap to cut new threads so that new screws could be used?

Morrigan,
I'm only 20. ;-P hehe

I am really hoping regular screws fit, I can't afford custom made things.

Hans,

CG didn't give detailed information, but I'm assuming the the slots in the steels are in bad shape rather than the threaded portion. They can get damaged rather easily when trying to force them out. Heat and penetrating oil and a lot of patience help, but if damage has been done, then they probably need to be repalced. The steels can be used again if they only need the rust removed or otherwise repaired. The phrase "completely demolished the rusted screws" leads me to believe they are damaged beyond recourse.

In regard to the promised and then withdrawn $5.00 to the first person who found the original quote--we extend mercy. This one is easy:
"The quality of mercy is not strain'd.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath.
It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes."

An interesting search, none the less.

GBK, if you'll read my post carefully there's no offer from me of $5.00. But, I'll send more than $5.00 to Mark when it's time.

During the next pledge drive, I'll send Mark a generous contribution as well...GBK

I was a drama major with a music minor. So, thus the quote.

By the way--that photo Mark C. posted is quite interesting. Is that what's on the cover of the LP?

No, just a picture of Captain Beefheart. Here's the cover of Trout Mask Replica:
