If you are still looking for fresh cane to cut in Sacramento, I have found a cache of it for you. Last night I found a small supply of arundo underneath the Howe Avenue bridge on the American River along the bike path. A lot of it was too small for clarinet reeds, however there were a few stalks that were the right size; I didn't take all of them.
Be warned: I narrowly escaped without police intervention (I heard sirens as I was leaving, and can only assume that they were coming for me). My mistake was being a tall, black man, wearing black from head to toe, including a black leather jacket and black turtleneck, wielding a hacksaw just after sunset! I was just asking for trouble. :-)
Happy foresting,
Mitch King

Oh, man! I'm glad you escaped with the goods anyway, Mitch You showed great courage in the face of the dreaded "NCN"... Neighborhood Cane-guard Network. By now they'll probably have it staked out with arundo sniffing dogs. I've heard, however, that Basset hounds soon lose interest if they don't get at least a taste of your jacket. Most experts agree that they're more suited to ferreting out bee hive poachers anyway - short round white guys in white sweatsuits on white sandy beaches at high noon, infra-white flashlight and hacksaw (talk about asking for trouble) -- 'it's okay officer, I was just looking for bee hives'. Yeah, right... :|
Thanks for the tip though. I didn't get out as I'd planned - wet, cold, windy, busy with other matters, etc. Hope to make it tomorrow if the weather's halfway co-operative. I don't suppose there'll be more'n a few anglers around this time of year. Anyway, the Coast Guard never comes up as far as the Howe bridge. Maybe I can snatch of few remaining stalks and escape before they spot me poaching your territory :]
Happy Tootin', Mitch
:)
