Hello--- Any suggestions on Buddy DeFranco recordings? I have Mr.
Lucky and just ordered Mr. Clarinet and Hark (with Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson). He really is the cat's meow.

Buddy's number one in my book. Check out some of the stuff with Terry Gibbs. "Kings of Swing" and "Air Mail Special" are both great.

"Blues Bag," Buddy's bass clarinet album with Art Blakey is superb.

Robert --
Sounds intriguing to me, too. Unfortunately, according to the All Music Guide, it's an out-of-print LP. :+(((

It is available on CD--I've bought two for myself and two more as gifts. It is also starting to turn up in used CD stores lately, in Houston, at least. Keep looking; it is definitely worthwhile.

I called a local record store here in the D.C. area (Olson's) and they said it's currently in print. A fairly recent re-issue. So hopefully I'll get my copy in a week or two. Buddy on bass should be smokin'.

There is some good early Buddy DeFranco on Tommy Dorsey recordings. Songs like Opus 1, Well Git It etc. have solos and clarinet leads by DeFranco. Some of the other solos are by Johnny Mince who was quite a player as well. The lead alto playing of Herman "Hymie" Shertzer and tenor solos by Bud Freeman are also worth listening to. Buddy's real first name was Boniface, no wonder he changed it.

Years ago, Mosaic put out a 4 or 5 cd set of early Buddy, post-Dorsey and post-early-listeners' poll wins--small group stuff--that might show up on eBay now & then. I'm not where my cds are at the moment, or I'd give you a personnel breakdown; but it's worth looking for.

Blues Bag is readily available on Amazon.
Mr. Clarinet is in print again. I believe it was one of the albums that Mosaic compiled in its out of print set (which I don't have). Snap it up while you can.

HAT and Robert --
Thanks for the update on the availability of Blues Bag. I was thinking the Internet version of the All Music Guide would be fairly up-to-date, but I'm sure they can't revisit every listing as often as they would like (still--the CD apparently came out in 2000!). Interesting set of reviews when doing the (should-have-been-done-earlier) Google search. Most intriguing..
