Hi Everyone,

There has always been a lot of text on the BB about clarinets that have been located either in the most unusual places and/or have been really stupendous deals. However, there has not really been a thread on the subject and I'd like to enjoy what others have to say on this subject.

Let me get it started.

I was at a music store going out of business auction and got for $15, a very nice ES Master Model; a repadding and it was a player. No one there knew what it was or anything about the value. At the same auction, I also got a New Old Stock Selmer 10S Full Boehm for less than $500. Both clarinets have been sold at sizeable profits, the proceeds of which continue to fund my equipment lust.

So, what's your story?

Hank

I purchased an old Noblet five-piece alto clarinet from our local music store for ten dollars ($10.00) a few years ago during a "clearance sale." Gave it a playing condition overhaul ($50.00) and had a great playing instrument. Regreatably, I sold it wo years ago for $600.00--made a nice profit, but I do miss playing it.

I have been doing the same thing for years. I buy clapped out instruments for auctions and overhaul them in between real repair jobs or if there is not much work on. Selling these horns generally provides holiday pay. As a repairer I have to warranty them which I have no hesitation in doing because I trust my own work. I generally stick to bassoons and saxophones because I find the re-sale on clarinets not as good. I have 3 selmer saxes I picked up as wrecks, dented and bent. 2 of these I now use as my number one horns which allowed me to sell some others. I also picked up some Gregory of Hollywood bass sax mouthpieces a while back for AUD$20, still in the boxes, each and sold them at a profit. Remember "one mans trash is another mans treasure"!
