I recently started learning how to play bassoon, and I want to know just how to rest my left hand. Should it rest on the bassoon itself? holding much of the weight? That seems to be what I've been doing and it's rather uncomfortable. Please help.

The left hand should hold some of the weight I think but not all of it--that's what the seat strap or neck strap is for, so your hand should not really be resting on the intstrument itself. If you find it has to, you may be holding the instrument at the wrong angle, and try adjusting. Hope that helps. Also, as a doubler on clarinet and bassoon, you might end up with some embouchure confusion--just a warning! though you will most likely find that you have more opportunities on bassoon as a good player. Have fun with it!

Hey Katfish,
I'm curious...how does the quality of the seat strap affect the distribution of the weight?

Wait... I just thought for a second that I might have misinterpreted your response. You see, I'm already using a seat strap, and I'm still having trouble knowing just how to rest my left hand. I agree with Clair that I may have better luck if I adjust the angle of the instrument. Thanks for your input, though.

The long joint should rest on the palm just below the fingers but not take all the weight. Different length crooks, number 2 and 3, make the balance different. A short reach bassoon, alas most student models especially Fox, will also rest in a different place. A plateau L3 or C finger means you can take more weight on your left hand without missing the ring. The left hand unavoidalbly takes some weight it is a question of making sure it does not effect the technique especially when you are using the high c and d keys and playing c# to d. You can also try having a balance hanger fitted although it makes the bassoon seem heavier to me.
