 French Vito Mouthpiece
Author: Mark P.

I recently bought a Bundy Mazzeo Model clarinet at an antique store for $35. At the store, I thought it had a regular Vito mouthpiece but when I got home and looked at it more carefully, I saw that it was made in France and was designated a 2V. I haven't tried it yet as it's absolutely filthy. Anyone have any experiences with these mouthpieces? Is this a Leblanc mid-level piece?

I have one of those things, acquired with some Clarinet bought a few years ago. Whatever its pedigree, it plays rather well for me. It seems to be a cut above the usual "here's-what-you-get-for-free-with-the-instrument" mouthpiece.
Regards,
John

Mark --

IMHO, the newer (last 20 years) Vito mpces are decent quality student mpces but cannot compare to the really fine student mpces such as the Hite Premiere or Fobes Debut. If your mpce is in need of work to play properly, you can buy a Fobes or Hite for about the same price as a competent refacing job.

Your Bundy Mazzeo probably dates from the 1960s. If your Vito mpce is of similar vintage, and demonstrates quality workmanship, it is probably a Riffault.

FWIW, I have a Riffault tenor sax mpce from that era which is labeled "Vito". The lay is rather close and long by today's standards and demands a strong reed, but remains my favorite for a "straight" tenor sound, such as for Lieutenant Kije.
