Hi,
Last year I attended a music camp in my area and was somewhat disappointed. While the top ensembles were excellent, there was only 2 hours of rehearsal a day plus a master class. This year I'm looking for a more focused program that accepts a good number of clarinetists, which generally means there is a band program in addition to an orchestra. So far I've found Interlochen, Brevard, and Tanglewood. I'm willing to shoot lower, but it's hard to find the in-between camps. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What areas are you willing to travel to?

I considered Northwestern's National High School Music Institute last year and actually was accepted to the program but did not attend. It might suit you. (http://music.northwestern.edu/nhsmi/index.html) However, it's very expensive. I went to the NYSSSA program instead, which is only open to NY residents and is mostly orchestral with only five clarinetists (but very focussed). I know a flutist who went to Tanglewood and she loved it.

Ella -

The examples you give are for completely separate groups.

Interlochen is for high-intermediate to advanced players from elementary school through high school.

Tanglewood is for the very top graduates from the top conservatories., and young professionals on the way up.

Let us know more about you, so we can suggest places that fit you.

Best regards.

BUTI (Boston University/Tanglewood Institute) is also available and is similar to Interlochen (for high-intermediate / advanced high school players). My son went there 6 years back and enjoyed it.

Try <internationalmusiccamp.com> for information about a great summer music camp located in the International Peace Garden on the North Dakota/Manitoba (USA-Canadian) boarder.

Greenwood Music Camp is a great place as well. It is about an hour away from Tanglewood in Massachusettes and has orchestra but the focus is chamber music (it is five weeks long). I highly recommend it for any high school student that loves music and wants to learn ; it is hard to get into (2-4 clarinets a summer) but well worth the effort. Find them online. I would also second BUTI as a top-notch program.

Ella,

Hi! My band director told me about Interlochen and how there is a scholarship program. I think you have to play a solo and a scale, I can't quite remember all the requirements, but they choose 40 some odd students to go for free. If you want, I can get more info on that. Yeah, I was going to try out for that, but then I realized that the WT band camp(Canyon, Texas) suites me very well. It is an inbetween camp, yes, but very affordable, and from experience, there is nothing like it. It costs $500, but you get a discount if you made all state. Also, Baylor University holds a camp, I am not sure how that one is, but the professor that I study with said that it is really good. Well, Ella, goodluck!!!

What about Hot Springs, Arkansas? Richard Hawkins is the clarinet mentor for 2003.
